Spatial Flow in a Modern Contemporary Landed Home Interior
Some homes announce themselves. Others unfold slowly, revealing their depth through light, proportion, and restraint.
At Burgundy Hill, the latter prevails.
This is a residence shaped not by spectacle, but by attunement to its architecture, to the rhythms of family life, and to time itself. Designed by Spacious Planners, the home stands as a study in quiet confidence: contemporary yet enduring, expressive yet composed.
It is not the client’s first collaboration with the team. Having experienced a successful renovation previously, the homeowners returned with trust already established a rare privilege that allowed the design to move beyond surface gestures and into deeper spatial reconsideration. What emerged is a house that feels considered rather than decorated, intentional rather than imposed.

Designing a Modern Contemporary Landed Home Layout
Burgundy Hill arrives with gifts that cannot be manufactured: an abundance of windows that draw daylight generously into the interior, a double-volume living hall that stretches upward with ease, and a pitched roof punctuated by an arched window, a quiet nod to classical form. These elements were not merely preserved; they were elevated.
Rather than compete with the home’s inherent character, the design leaned into it. Quiet lines, neutral palettes, and modern finishes form the foundation, softened with touches of farmhouse warmth, Scandinavian clarity, and bohemian ease. The result is chic yet comforting — a home that welcomes without overwhelming.
Here, calm is not an aesthetic choice. It is a design principle.

The brief was ambitious. Four bedrooms, a walk-in wardrobe, a dry kitchen with island, a storeroom, work-from-home space, wellness and lounging zones — all within an existing structure and a comfortable budget.
The solution lay not in adding, but in re-zoning.
Structural and spatial relationships were rethought entirely. One bedroom was halved to give rise to an open-concept kitchen. A former secondary dining area was reimagined as a dedicated storeroom, finally providing space for bulky items that once had no proper home. These moves were surgical rather than excessive, each one unlocking flow rather than clutter.

Most notably, the master bedroom was intentionally positioned at the epicentre of the house. It acts as a bridge — connecting the children’s private retreat on the third level with the vibrant communal spaces below. This central placement allowed the parents’ domain to feel both anchored and elevated, with a seamlessly integrated walk-in wardrobe forming part of the architectural rhythm rather than an afterthought.

The Living Hall: A Vertical Statement
The living hall is the home’s quiet showpiece. Its lofty doublevolume height demanded a response that honoured scale without resorting to excess. The answer arrived in the form of a bespoke, fireplace-inspired TV feature wall — an architectural gesture that grounds the space while allowing the vertical volume to breathe.
A custom arched metal framework draws the eye upward, subtly demarcating the entrance and staircase while maintaining visual continuity. Low-height shoe cabinetry keeps the focus on what truly captivates: the interplay of arches, light, and proportion. This is grandeur refined — confident, yet composed.

Bedrooms are conceived as personal sanctuaries rather than stylistic statements. The master bedroom speaks in muted tones and simple lines, with shaker door profiles introducing a touch of classic charm to a modern canvas. The walk-in wardrobe extends this language, its full-height mirrors expanding the sense of space, while delicate gold handles lend understated elegance.
The daughter’s bedroom on the third level is framed by a pitched ceiling and arched window — architectural features that establish a sense of whimsy without excess. Clean lines, a softly arched headboard wall, and open shelving nestled between windows create a room that feels both youthful and timeless.
Her ensuite echoes this calm. Understated grey tiles, warm wood textures, and subtle vertical striping create a spa-like retreat. In the master ensuite, a monochromatic palette is elevated by timeless marble hexagon tiles — a bold yet classic choice that grounds the space in quiet luxury. Double vanities ensure functionality never compromises serenity.

The Heart of a Modern Contemporary Landed Home Interior
What was once a bedroom now functions as the heart of the home. The open-concept dry kitchen flows effortlessly into the dining area and onward to an adjoining outdoor patio, dissolving boundaries between indoor and outdoor living.
Spatial constraints initially posed a challenge, particularly in integrating an island within the pre-existing structural layout. Instead of forcing an expected solution, the design introduced a peninsula anchored to an existing column — a decision that transformed limitation into character. Practical, sculptural, and quietly striking, it anchors the space without interrupting flow.
Material choices reinforce warmth and durability. Where structural wall removal necessitated a change in flooring, low maintenance tiles were selected to emulate the softness of wooden planks, introducing a cozier atmosphere without compromising longevity.

The second level reveals a thoughtfully curated lounge corner and work-from-home zone — a dual-purpose space where wellness and productivity coexist. A modern black latticed metal framework serves as a striking divider, juxtaposing contemporary geometry against existing colonial-style balusters. It is here that the home’s design philosophy becomes most evident: harmony through contrast, calm through balance.

This project unfolded against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic — a period defined by uncertainty, resource scarcity, and disruption. With Malaysian partners impacted by border restrictions, progress could have stalled. Instead, foresight and long-standing relationships proved invaluable.
By collaborating closely with Singapore-based vendors, Spacious Planners ensured continuity and quality despite fluctuating prices and limited resources. The project’s smooth delivery was not accidental; it was the result of trust built over years between designer, partners, and client alike.
From design development in August 2020 to site works commencing in October and handover by January 2021, Burgundy Hill stands as a quiet testament to resilience, adaptability, and the power of thoughtful planning.

A home that understands its inhabitants and, in doing so, becomes timeless.
At its core, Burgundy Hill reflects Spacious Planners’ design ethos, an emphasis on the evolution of form over time. Materials are chosen not just for appearance, but for how they age. Spaces are designed not for a moment, but for a lifetime of living.
There is no excess here. No unnecessary flourish. Only spaces that feel intuitively right — places where light settles gently, where movement feels natural, where storage is thoughtfully concealed, and where each family member finds both privacy and connection. This is a home that does not demand attention. It earns it quietly.
In the end, Burgundy Hill is not defined by trends or labels. It is defined by how it makes one feel: grounded, calm, and deeply at ease.
